Joint Review Panel Releases Recommendation On OPG’s Darlington New Nuclear Project |

OPG has received the Joint Review Panel’s report on the Darlington New Nuclear Project Environmental Assessment and Licence to Prepare Site application. OPG is pleased the Panel has arrived at the same conclusion as OPG, that the project is not expected to result in any significant adverse environmental effects, given mitigation.

On Wednesday, September 28, 2011 in a continuing effort to keep the electorate informed, the Durham Region Association of REALTORS®, Durham Region Home Builders’ Association and the Greater Oshawa Chamber of Commerce have teamed up with Durham Radio Inc., owner of CKDO Radio to host a Provincial Election Debate for the Oshawa, Durham and Whitby/Oshawa ridings. The candidates from the three ridings will be invited to attend and state their platforms and debate the issues of concern to the business community.

NBL Canada Officially Welcomes Oshawa To The Fold |

At a press conference held August 8th at the General Motors Centre the National Basketball League of Canada announced that the City of Oshawa, has been formally accepted as the first expansion team to join the league in its inaugural season. Oshawa joins teams from London, Halifax, Saint John and Moncton (NB), Quebec City, and PEI in the NBL for the 2011-12 season. Cris Douglas, President of the Greater Oshawa Chamber of Commerce is pictured with Mark Taylor, one of the members of the owner group of the new Oshawa NBL team. Mark Taylor is a veteran Canadian Actor and you may recognize him from “Flashpoint”.

Durham Region Hosts Tourism Summit And Creative Awards |

Regional Chair and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Roger Anderson announced Durham Tourism’s inaugural Durham Tourism Summit and Durham Art of Transition Creative Awards (DACTA), to be held on November 25th, 2011. The day-long event will be held at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) Health and Wellness Centre at 2000 Simcoe Street North in Oshawa. “The Durham Tourism Summit and Durham Art of Transition Creative Awards will engage our tourism industry while also inviting the public to get involved, and discover all Durham has to offer,” said Anderson. “This unique celebration of Durham Region’s creative economy will showcase our rich history, dynamic attractions, and innovative business community.”

Call for proposal - Deadline: September 23, 2011. The Enabling Accessibility Fund (EAF) supports community-based projects across Canada that improve accessibility, remove barriers, and enable Canadians with disabilities to participate in and contribute to their communities. The Government of Canada built on the success of this program for people with disabilities delivered from 2008 to 2010, by providing an additional $45 million over the next three years, starting in 2010.

The Management Development Centre is launching a new program for Fall 2011 called “Small Business Management Certificate Program”. Morden Shapiro is a UOIT instructor who, throughout his career, has specialized in the area of small business management. COPA Responds to Pickering Lands Needs Assessment Study |

Responding to Transport Canada’s release of its findings on the Pickering Lands Needs Assessment Study the Canadian Owners and Pilots Association (COPA) announced on August 10, 2011 that it has secured the services of Malone Given Parsons Ltd. to review the findings and recommendations for retention of the Pickering Lands as a future airline airport site.

2010 Pickering Lands Needs Assessment Study Released |

On July 11, 2011 Transport Canada released the findings of the 2010 Pickering Lands Needs Assessment Study. The study was conducted to broaden and update previous work on the role and capacity of airports in the Greater Golden Horseshoe area in meeting future needs for passenger, cargo and recreational traffic within a 25-year horizon.

In Memoriam - Chamber Mourns The Loss Of A Good Friend |

Past President of the Greater Oshawa Chamber of Commerce and respected community and businessman, Fred Diamond past away on July 24, 2011. Mr. Diamond was President of the Greater Oshawa Chamber of Commerce in 1985. Fred was a big part of the Chamber’s history in 1985 dealing with finding the Chamber a new home to hiring a new General Manager for the Chamber. President of the Chamber for 18 months, Mr. Diamond dealt with a number of issues pertaining to Oshawa in that time, including the first air service from Oshawa to Buffalo as well as sending a letter to the Region of Durham in support of the Darlington Nuclear plant.

GM Invests $117 million in Oshawa Assembly Plant - All-new Cadillac XTS to start Production in 2012: |

GM announced today (Thursday, August 4t, 2011) an investment of $117 million to prepare the Oshawa Assembly Plant to build the all-new Cadillac XTS, creating or retaining 400 jobs on the Flex Line.The Cadillac XTS takes a new, modern approach to the large luxury sedan, combining high-tech electronics and engaging driving dynamics in a car that is also elegant and spacious. First shown as the Cadillac XTS Platinum concept car last year, the final production model Cadillac XTS will be revealed in the coming months. Production is planned to start in the first half of 2012. |

GM Net Income Increases 89 percent to $2.5 Billion |

Net income of $1.54 per share; EBIT of $3.0 billion. General Motors Co. (NYSE: GM) today announced second quarter net income attributable to common stockholders of $2.5 billion, or $1.54 per fully-diluted share, marking the company’s sixth consecutive profitable quarter. In the second quarter of 2010, GM’s net income attributable to common stockholders was $1.3 billion, or 85 cents per fully-diluted share.
Revenue increased $6.2 billion to $39.4 billion, compared with the second quarter of 2010. Earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) adjusted was $3.0 billion compared with $2.0 billion in the second quarter of 2010. There were no special items in either period.
