In late December the Greater Oshawa Chamber of Commerce participated in a meeting of the Greater Toronto Hamilton Area Chamber of Commerce to hear a presentation by Bruce McCuaig, President and CEO of Metrolinx on its plans for the Big Move. The meeting was hosted by the Ontario Chamber of Commerce in Toronto. The discussion was informative and fruitful and a good start to what is seen as a productive relationship between Metrolinx, the Ontario Chamber of Commerce (OCC) and the business community in Ontario.

Greater Oshawa Chamber of Commerce Achieves Renewal of Chamber of Commerce Accreditation With Distinction |

Greater Oshawa Chamber of Commerce (GOCC) is pleased to announce our recent achievement of renewal of Chamber of Commerce Accreditation with Distinction through the Chamber Accreditation Council of Canada (CACC).
GOCC’s application was reviewed and passed the Council’s strict examination, having satisfied the highest level of chamber of commerce standards and practices in the areas of: Membership Programs/Services; Policy & Advocacy; Organization/Administration; Governance; and Strategic Planning. The Accreditation is akin to ISO quality standards, but for chambers of commerce in Canada, with over 100 specific criteria that must be met with demonstrated evidence in an extensive submission.

The Board of Directors of the Ontario Chamber of Commerce announced that Allan O’Dette has been selected as the new President & CEO of the Ontario Chamber of Commerce (OCC).
“Appointing an experienced advocate who has been very active within the Chamber movement will help ensure that the voice of Ontario businesses and Chambers is heard,” said David Sword, Chair of the Ontario Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. “This is of particular importance in light of a shifting global economy and renewed fiscal restraint at all three levels of government. It is a time when the priorities of businesses need to continue to be advanced.”

Prosperity Initiative Supports Southern Ontario Manufacturers |

Manufacturers in southern Ontario will improve their productivity and international competitiveness thanks to a contribution of $18.9 million provided by FedDev Ontario’s Prosperity Initiative announced in January. The funding will be allocated to Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters (CME) to launch a productivity improvement program, SMART Prosperity Now.

Province Urged To Keep Corporate Tax Promise |

Ontari o Chamber Report - The Ontario Chamber of Commerce (OCC) is urging the provincial government to keep its promise to reduce corporate income tax (CIT) rates to 10 percent by 2013, amidst reports that the government is considering delaying the tax reduction. In its letter to the Hon. Dwight Duncan, the OCC asks the Minister of Finance to commit to implementing its comprehensive tax package in full.

Ontario Power Generation (OPG) has submitted the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) and Integrated Safety Review (ISR) reports to the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC)—two important regulatory requirements in support of Darlington Refurbishment. The submissions demonstrate positive conclusions in support of refurbishment activities and the continued operation of the Darlington station.

During 2011 the Chamber staff, with the assistance of its volunteer ambassadors and events committee, organized over ninety networking events and committee meetings throughout the year ranging in size from 10 to 12 attendees at a Lunch and Learn to over 300 attending the Annual Mayor’s Luncheon. The Chamber boardroom saw a wide variety of people come through the doors to attend over 30 meetings for members and government agencies. Membership, in the recovering economy grew 1.8% with over 1,125 entrepreneurs, managers and corporate executives on the Chamber Who’s Who list.

Stay safe at home with your family this holiday season! The holiday season is one of the most dangerous times of the year for home fires. Oshawa Fire Services is urging residents to follow “12 Days of Holiday Fire Safety” to help prevent the most common types of home fires that occur during the holiday season. “Make holiday safety a priority this year. Get the whole family involved and make sure everyone knows how to get out if a fire does occur,” said Oshawa Fire Chief Steve Meringer. “It is extremely important to install smoke alarms on every storey of the home as well as a carbon monoxide alarm and to test them regularly to make sure they work.
