OPG Takes Another Step Toward Site Preparation at Darlington PDF Print E-mail
The Federal Government has responded to the recommendations of the Joint Review Panel and approved the Darlington New Nuclear Project Environmental Assessment (EA).  “OPG is pleased with the Federal Government’s decision,” said Albert Sweetnam,  OPG’s Executive Vice President,  Nuclear Projects. “We were confident in the conclusions of our extensive studies, however independent review and confirmation provides added assurance that the project will not result in any significant adverse environmental effects, given mitigation.”

The City of Oshawa is hosting 6 public Open Houses as part of its consideration of the potential extension of Runway 12/30 at the Oshawa Municipal airport on April 16, 17 and 18, 2012 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm and 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm each day at the Oshawa and District Shrine Club, 1626 Simcoe Street North, Oshawa. Staff and consultants will be available to answer questions.

The Greater Oshawa Chamber of Commerce encourages the business community to attend and provide comments on the proposed extension. Following the public Open Houses, a public meeting will be held at a regularly scheduled Development Services Committee to consider all comments received.  The public will have the opportunity to speak at this meeting.

Nominate a leader in your community today! The Greater Oshawa Chamber of Commerce is accepting nominations of companies whose significant business achievements have made an important contribution to the economic and social well being of the Greater Oshawa area. 

All businesses or industries within the Greater Oshawa boundaries - Oshawa/Whitby border to Hwy 115/35 and north to Oshawa/Scugog border - whether they are a member of the Greater Oshawa Chamber of Commerce or not, are eligible. Any business or industry outside the Greater Oshawa boundaries may be nominated provided the company is a member of the Greater Oshawa Chamber of Commerce. New horticulture students will gain valuable hands-on experience in Parkwood’s historic gardens and greenhouses. Durham College and Parkwood National Historic Site (Parkwood) announced an innovative partnership that will see them work together to develop and deliver educational curricula for the college’s new two-year Horticulture Technician diploma program, which is offered through the School of Science & Engineering Technology and launching in September 2012.

OPG Marks An Important Milestone For Darlington Refurbishment PDF Print E-mail
Ontario Power Generation Inc. (OPG) has taken another step toward the refurbishment of the Darlington Nuclear Generating Station. OPG has awarded a two-phase contract to plan for and then replace major components of the four reactors at Darlington. The contract for more than $600 million to a joint venture of SNC-Lavalin Nuclear Inc. and Aecon Construction Group Inc. is one of several that will be awarded for the refurbishment of the facility.

Past Chamber President, Cris Douglas presented the 2011 Volunteer of the Year Award at the Mayor’s Annual Address & Board of Director’s Swearing In Ceremony on Friday, February 24th, 2012 at the Tosca Banquet Hall & Conference Centre. Congratulations to Sean McNamara of Petley-Hare Insurance Brokers who was chosen by the Chamber Staff for his tireless efforts and dedication to the Chamber over the past year on various committees and at various events. Sean was someone the staff could count on to help out whenever needed! Oshawa Mayor John Henry kept a firm focus on positive developments in the past year in his annual address to the Greater Oshawa Chamber of Commerce. The event, hosted by BMO Bank of Montreal for the 20th consecutive year, was held February 24 at the Tosca Banquet Hall. After one full year in office Mayor Henry remains “Oshawa Proud” summarizing his past year as “365 fantastic days”. 

In the midst of the City budget process, he told business owners that council would bring in the lowest tax increase in Durham and said the budget's message is “Oshawa is open for business.”

Greater Oshawa Chamber of Commerce (GOCC) announced their recent achievement of renewal of Chamber of Commerce Accreditation with Distinction through the Chamber Accreditation Council of Canada (CACC) and on Friday, February 24, the GOCC President, Geoff Michie, accepted the Accreditation of Distinction plaque from Ontario Chamber of Commerce President, Allan Odette before more than 200 business leaders at the recent Mayor’s Luncheon at Tosca Banquet Hall & Conference Centre. “On behalf of the Ontario Chamber of Commerce, congratulations on your achievement; you continue to demonstrate to your community and to other Chambers of Commerce in Canada that you operate your Chamber in a strategic and professional way and that your operations reflect standards of business excellence,” said Allan Odette, President, Ontario Chamber of Commerce.
