100 UOIT banners installed in the downtown core just in time for university’s convocation. Downtown Oshawa is fast establishing a reputation as a centre for academic excellence with the development of the University of Ontario Institute of Technology’s (UOIT) downtown campus. The City of Oshawa, Downtown Oshawa Business Improvement Area (DOBIA) and UOIT partnered together to install banners along key corridors to mark the Downtown Oshawa University District.

Harmonized Sales Tax, Transition Guide and Calculator Tools PDF Print E-mail

On July 1, 2010, the provinces of Ontario and British Columbia will implement the harmonized sales tax (HST). The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) will administer that tax. Here are a few helpful links to more information on the Harmonized Sales Tax. While you should certainly contact your accountant or bookkeeper to understand the transition rules and regulations as they pertain specifically to your business, these links may help:

Workplace Violence & Harassment Tool Kit PDF Print E-mail
The Ontario Government has released a "How To" Tool Kit, which is a template guide to help businesses comply with new requirements relating to workplace violence and harassment. Starting June 15, businesses must: develop workplace policies and programs; assess risks for workplace violence including situations involving handling of cash, dealing with potentially violent clients, working alone, working in high crime areas, protecting valuable goods and transporting people or goods; and identify possible ways to control.  Click HERE [PDF] for a copy of the Workplace Violence & Harassment Tool Kit.

Chamber Wins Support for Accountability of School Boards to Property Taxpayers PDF Print E-mail

The 99th Annual General Meeting of the Ontario Chamber of Commerce (OCC) was held in Windsor from April 29 to May 2, 2010. During the policy session on Saturday May 1st, the delegates from over 160 Chambers of Commerce and Boards of Trade in the province of Ontario, representing 60,000 businesses of all sizes, in all economic sectors and from every area of the province, debated and overwhelmingly adopted the Greater Oshawa Chamber of Commerce resolution calling for “Accountability of School Boards to Property Taxpayers”.

2010 Carnegie Award Presented To Bob Malcolmson At The Ontario Chamber of Commerce AGM PDF Print E-mail
The Chamber Executives Chamber of Commerce Ontario (CEO) awarded the James Gordon Carnegie Memorial Award to Greater Oshawa Chamber of Commerce, Chief Executive Officer & General Manager, Bob Malcolmson on Friday, April 30, 2010 at the Ontario Chamber of Commerce Annual General Meeting & Convention in Windsor. The award presentation was made by 2009 Award winner Bob Hammersley of the St Thomas Chamber of Commerce and assisted by CEO Chair Kelly Darnley and Johnston Group representative, Debbi Nicholson.

The James Gordon Carnegie Award is presented annually to a Chamber Executive of Ontario member, who is nominated by their peers, for their exemplary efforts as a leader and mentor to other chamber managers.

City Approves Oshawa Harbour Deal PDF Print E-mail
The Greater Oshawa Chamber of Commerce welcomes the news of Oshawa City council approving the deal negotiated by City Staff and Transport Canada officials in respect to the Oshawa Harbour. This current news along with announcement by Minister Flaherty last year of the $9.2 million in federal funding over two years for environmental assessments and remediation of harbour marina lands and the west wharf and the creation of a Canadian Port Authority (CPA) announced by the Minister Baird is a good start to rejuvenating Port Oshawa.

Though construction of a waste from energy facility in Clarington remains a burning and contentious issue, in the end, dealing with important environmental issues comes down to separating the science from the politics. That’s the message Clarington Mayor Jim Abernethy shared with members of the business community at a recent Greater Oshawa Chamber of Commerce breakfast sponsored by Bob Owen and staff of Roy Nichols Motors Courtice. The philosophy comes from Canadian political commentator Rex Murphy and is easily applied here, the Mayor believes.

OPG Takes Next Step In Durham Region Investment PDF Print E-mail
Site preparation and servicing for proposed building begins this fall. Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is proceeding, in conjunction with the Municipality of Clarington and Durham Region, with site preparation and servicing for a proposed 250,000-square foot multi-purpose building on OPG-owned land in the Clarington Energy Business Park adjacent to the Darlington Nuclear Station. This is the next step in OPG’s ongoing investment in Durham Region.

Workplace Violence Law Comes Into Effect June 15, 2010 PDF Print E-mail
Workplaces with more than five regular employees will be required by June 15, 2010 to have all the necessary policies, programs, measures and procedures in place in order to be in compliance with the recent amendments made to the Ministry of Labour's Occupational Health and Safety Act (Bill 168-Violence in the Workplace).

Buy American Rules PDF Print E-mail

The US Office of Management and Budget has just released the regulations pertaining to the Buy American deal that was reached in February.  It is important that Canadian companies who are selling into U.S. markets impacted by the Buy American restrictions understand these rules and share them with their customers. Documentation is available which outlines how the regulations are to be applied and may be useful for Canadian firms who find procurement officers that lack an understanding of the new exceptions for Canadian goods.

 
Chamber Records 12th Straight Year Of Surplus PDF Print E-mail

At the Annual General Meeting (AGM), held at the GM Centre on March 30th, Chamber members learned that the Chamber was financially sound and for the 12th straight year the Auditor reported a surplus. The Chamber ended the year with a slight dip in membership and in the first quarter of 2010 membership was rebounding. Dave Hare, President of the Chamber in 2009, submitted the 2009 Annual Report reflecting on the actions of the Chamber during the past year—stating the Chamber remained focused on putting in place a marketing strategy, continuing its pro-active support for the completion of Highway 407 and the finalizing of the Oshawa Harbour.

Oshawa Sees A 6.8 Per Cent Electricity Drop During Earth Hour PDF Print E-mail

Oshawa residents responded to the Earth Hour challenge by reducing the demand for electricity this past Saturday evening from 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm. Oshawa’s demand for electricity dropped 6.84 per cent or 10 megawatts during the one hour worldwide initiative, compared to Ontario’s drop of approximately 4 per cent or 560 megawatts as reported by the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO).

Sign Unveiling Marks Milestone In Trent’s Vision For A New Campus In Oshawa PDF Print E-mail

As part of the March 18th open house in Oshawa, Trent University unveiled a sign at its new Oshawa Thornton Road campus and announced a generous $1.2 million bequest that will provide direct financial support to students. The open house event attracted over 100 people, including prospective students and their families, to Trent’s current location at the UOIT/Durham College campus. Students were personally greeted by his worship John Gray, Mayor of the City of Oshawa and Trent’s President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Steven E. Franklin. At the open house students participated in sample lectures, toured the existing facility, engaged in one-on-one discussions with faculty and liaison staff, and learned more about Trent’s plans for a new campus in Oshawa.
